King of Bhutan

It looks like 2011 is the year of Royal Weddings.

After Prince William, now the Duke of Cambridge, wed his long time girlfriend last April 29, 2011, Prince Albert, the reigning sovereign Prince of Monaco will also walk-down-the-aisle this coming July 2, 2011, his bride-to-be is Charlene Wittstock, a South African Olympian. Prince Georg of Prussia, a distant cousin of Prince William, also announced his engagement last January 2011 to fellow royal, Princess Sophie of Isenburg but their wedding date is yet to be confirmed.

Now another royal wedding is rolling up in the horizon, this time in Southeast Asia.

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, the current head of the Royal House of Wangchuk in Bhutan, announced his official engagement to Jetsun Pema last May 20, 2011, and the wedding date will be sometime in October this year (2011). The 31-year-old King, known as Druk Gyalpo among Bhutanese or Dragon King, completed his MS Philosophy in Politics degree at the prestigious Oxford University in England. He described his fiancee as "a kind-hearted girl who is very supportive and whom I can trust".

Bhutan, a small nation between India and China, is a remote and idyll country, until Jigme's father, Jigme Singye, who abdicated in 2006 to give way for his son, made an extensive reformation during his reign and allowed television to be available in the country in 1999, the last nation in the world to welcome television in their homeland. The old King also made several political reforms including its transition from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy.

King Jigme's upcoming wedding will help boost the image of Bhutan in the global community as the event is expected to be celebrated in pomp and grandeur like other royal weddings. The King is one of the youngest crown heads in the world and said to be the most famous royal in Asia because of his good looks and charming smile.
